Electrification of Aquaculture

Moen Marin has been awarded 24 projects to use electrification as a zero-emission technology in vessels, contributing to a significant step forward in making the aquaculture sector more sustainable. Plug has received funding to build eight corresponding charging stations. These supported projects are a collaboration between charging infrastructure operators and technology suppliers of zero-emission vessels, working together to develop and implement sustainable maritime transport solutions.

As the world’s largest supplier of workboats to the aquaculture industry, Moen Marin leads the way in sustainable development for the sector. The company has delivered nearly 60 electric vessels to the aquaculture industry. This allocation includes the delivery of both fully electric site boats and passenger transport vessels.

A charging infrastructure company under Eviny, Plug is building charging infrastructure for the maritime sector and is a partner in all the projects.


“Norway has the world’s second-longest coastline, and this is a great start to building the charging infrastructure needed along our coast. We are constructing charging facilities that can be used by multiple vessels and operators, which is an important prerequisite for successful maritime transition,” says Bjørn Hønsi Følling, Head of Maritime Charging at Plug.

Ten of the projects focus on fully electric passenger transport vessels for the aquaculture sector. These vessels will accommodate 6–10 passengers, have a service speed of 20–25 knots, and a range of up to 40 nautical miles—leading specifications for fully electric vessels. Each zero-emission vessel will save 77 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

In 2023, Moen Marin and Pascal Technologies also received funding from Enova to deliver one passenger vessel, which is currently under construction.

Pascal Technologies is a maritime technology company focused on innovative solutions aimed at achieving zero emissions. Pascal’s hull technology enhances energy efficiency by creating an air pocket between the hull and the water, partially lifting the vessel out of the water.
